The New Parliament House was inaugurated on May 28, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The new Parliament House in New Delhi was constructed as a part of India’s Central Vista Redevelopment Project. It was constructed at a whopping cost of Rs. 970 crores. After heavy rains in Delhi-NCR areas, the new Parliament House got flooded with water, and rainwater leaks erupted from the roof. The rainwater did not just submerge the Parliament House but also tax-payers’ Rs. 970 crores from which the Parliament House was constructed.
Akhilesh Yadav Trolls BJP Government
Taking a dig at the water leak incident in the Parliament House, the Samajwadi Party leader and former CM of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to troll the BJP Government constructed Parliament house and wrote, “Till now we used to carry umbrella outside the Parliament, now we will have to carry it inside also. Along with Weather Resilient Crop, the government should also pay attention to Weather Resilient Construction. Is it possible that some party is on the verge of disintegration and wants to make ‘leaking roof’ its election symbol for the new party, that is why such pictures are being seen everywhere during his rule.”
Comparison of Constructions During Different Eras
The netizens are comparing the constructions made by different people during different eras. A post trolled the new Parliament House’s construction by comparing it to the 1638-built Red Fort by Emperor Shah Jahan and the 1931-inaugurated India Gate built by British rulers. The comparison was with the agenda that while India Gate and Red Fort are 93 years old and 386 years old, respectively, they have not faced any water leaks, while Parliament House, built by the BJP government and inaugurated just one year ago, has been flooded. During 1921 to 1927, the old Parliament house was constructed by British rulers and inaugurated in 1927 by them. Though it has been inaugurated for 97 years, the old Parliament house had not faced rainwater leaks.
Flood-Like Situation in the New Parliament House
Congress MP Manickam Tagore moves an adjournment notice in Lok Sabha over the water leakage situation in the new Parliament House lobby. He stated that the water leakage has occurred on the path that is used by the President of India while entering the Parliament building. Manickam highlighted “potential issues with the building’s weather resilience, just one year after its completion.”
