On a blinding Sunday afternoon in Vikravandi, Tamil Nadu’s mass hero Vijay stepped into the political squares with his party—Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)—vowing to transform the way change is crafted and democracy produced forever by cutting across all social straddles and said he will unfailingly stand for secularism.
Thousands descended on the venue — far more than police estimates of two lakh people who went there to see if this charismatic 50-year-old actor, known by his fans as “Thalapathy,” could break free from a political duopoly that has dominated Tamil Nadu for so long. Through more than half a century of Tamil Nadu politics, it has been the story of two behemoths – DMK and AIADMK.
They local stalwarts along with their regional parties have divided the political scenario in state, leaving less than one-fourth vote bank for anyone to over come them. The verdict on Vijay, however, is that the TVK actor could reign over here to stay and there will be a ruckus in box-office.
Vijay’s game plan – The Debut of a Star as Politician!
Tamil Nadu is a difficult state to win for anyone, and struggling as some political rookies have before now means Kamal must be either confident or ambitious doing this—launching his own party—and hitting the campaign trail. The electoral process is likely to take two weeks but Vijay will tell you he’s not your average matinee idol and certainly no political novice. Vijay stated emotionally, revealing that he had come back from using his prime to for once putting trust in the peopled and thus making a political entry amid the peak of success.
It is a view that seems to strike something real in fans, who not only think of him as sexy but also perhaps finally the person with whom these elevated principles could justify themselves and hit on earth. Unlike predecessors Kamal Haasan and Vijayakanth — both tried, but neither left a lasting imprint—Vijay organically puts popularity like Rajinikanth with timing (DMK and AIADMK face corruption charges; vindictive political stasis) to tell them who the real boss is.
A New Dravidian Flavor?
Vijay’s Political Ideology Dravidian principles resonate with Vijay’s political ethos, only his is tinted with Tamil-nationalism unlike the rational colours of DMK or ADMK. In his speech at the rally, he vowed to promote secularism, social justice and equality as well women empowerment. Ideologically, Vijay has crafted TVK as consolidation of Dravidian ethos with Tamil pride and Gandhian values taking cues from icons like Periyar, Kamaraj to even a Mahatma Phule or a Dr. B.R. Ambedkar who he counts among his inspirational idols.
Even going to the extent of not just condemning DMK but also extending his censure against BJP, stating that while he sees DMK as being merely a political opponent to him, in contrast he considers BJP to be an ideological enemy. This underscores a larger trend in Tamil Nadu for leaders to keep the BJP at arm’s length, as seen by actions such as that of actor Rajinikanth last month.
Whereas the BJP’s approach was rooted in Hindutva, TVK conceived of this entity with its own set of distinct ‘Tamil’ values embedded within it (something that would stand apart from Jallikattu and cricket), a two-language policy (compulsory signs be written only in English or Tamil) – as well autonomy for the state. So the question is: will their ideals combined with firebrand rhetoric translate to votes?
The Long and Winding Road: Obstacles, Similarities
But the trend of actors stepping into Tamil Nadu politics isn’t a new one. Vijay, walks in the footprints of celluloid icons-turned-political colossuses such as M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and Jayalalithaa – talismanic figures whose onscreen charisma held sway among voters who transferred their loyalty to them from reel life thereafter avidly turning into real-life fans. Feeding the ambitionBut not all from filmdom have garnered a single vote; Vijayakanth’s DMDK and Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) — as examples.
Political Analyst put this well — ” His launch was like hitting a six in the first over…!! Whether he scores a hundred, or gets out soon after that will only be answered by time. Raman cautions that however promising Vijay’s innings at the crease may have been, TN politics remains remorseless, especially with DMK showroom salesman alongside long-term wrecking agents.
Vijay + Star Power = Political Clout?
Vijay is also seen by his fans as the “Thalapathy” of change, who can tip scales in favour of Tamil Nadu this time. The spectacle of his debut rally and its early success demonstrates that potential ability to parlay cinematic charisma into political magnetism. But this fanbase has to evolve into a reliable electorate. MGR and Jayalalithaa did it by truly touching the masses outside of what they saw on screen, reminding them that they mattered.
So, Vijay at 50 may have the energy and charisma (or some would rightly say demagoguery), but does he really have that staying power as well accompanying with a grassroots strategy? With one of the weakest parties in Tamil Nadu and an electorate that political analysts say is tired of its old Dravidian dream.
Vijay will need to use a lot more than just his star wattage:
He requires cadre — MPs rooting for him all around the state; he needs voters who come out only when they wish or are compelled by their leaders to do so; some idea at least about what it means politically amidst these tangled threads. But will the ambition for an “addiction-free” Tamil Nadu, social harmony and climate-conscious development that Vijay promised being a star ever resonate beyond fandom?
Will he be able to break across caste, class and religious lines; can the small Senkodiyan avan (as Shankar says characterizes Seeman) take on the Dravidian giants at their own game? However, what is undeniable is that Vijay has brought sparkle to the still waters of Tamil Nadu politics, but are those questions by any chance far less than their numbers?
After all, as anyone who follows politics would tell you: overturning a deeply ingrained political world is difficult. Those political veterans in TN that have outlasted challengers before. Vijay Shaneesh’s signing could signal the beginning of a new story, but whether it turns out to be an amazing plot twist or merely fade into oblivion as part of someone else’s narration will only be known with time.
