Emergency Measures Taken by Capri Mayor
Capri’s mayor, Paolo Falco, has banned tourists from visiting on the island. This decision was made to prevent further pressure on the island’s water supply, which has been facing severe shortages.
Ferries Turned Back
Several ferries heading to Capri from Naples and Sorrento were forced to turn back. This measure was necessary to manage the water crisis effectively.
Technical Problems with Water Supply
The company responsible for supplying water to Capri reported a technical issue on the mainland on Thursday. Although the problem was fixed, the water supply to Capri remained unstable, causing concern for the island’s residents.
Local Tanks Running Low
Mayor Falco described the situation as “a real emergency.” While most of the island had water on Friday, local tanks were depleting quickly. The arrival of thousands of tourists daily would have created more problem of water crisis.
Water Collection for Residents
To manage the crisis, residents can collect up to 25 liters of drinking water per household from a supply tanker. This provision aims to ensure that the locals have enough drinking water during the shortage.
Ban on Tourists
The ban on tourists does not apply to residents. It will remain in place until the water supply situation improves. This precaution is necessary to prevent further depletion of the already scarce water resources.
