Russian born Pavel Durov is a billionaire who founded “Telegram,” a social networking website and is the CEO of the same. Telegram is a social media platform which is known for its unfiltered content available across globe. Due to this unfiltered content, a debate has been talking place on freedom of speech and illegal content available on the internet.

Where and When Was Pavel Arrested?

Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested at the Paris Bourget Airport on Saturday. Reportedly, Pavel Durov was traveling to Paris from Azerbaijan through his private jet. Some reports suggest that Pavel has obtained French Citizenship in 2021 and is also a Citizen of United Arab Emirates.

Why Was Pavel Arrested?

Reportedly, Pavel Durov was arrested on a warrant related to Telegram’s lack of moderation, which resulted into money laundering, drug trafficking and also spread of pedophilic content on Telegram. This arrest raises questions on whether tech bosses should be responsible for the content available on their platform.

Russian Embassy

On Sunday, the Russian Embassy situated in France confirmed the detention and also said that they are in contact with Pavel’s attorney. The Russian Embassy in France had also said that they demanded consular access to Pavel and his rights must be upheld. The embassy said that France authorities has “avoided engagement” on the topic of Pavel Durov situation.
