In yet another chaotic incident, over 25,000 job seekers in Kalina, Mumbai on Tuesday, July 16 turned up for a walk-in interview at the Air India Airport Services Ltd. The company had announced 2,216 vacancies for handyman positions and a number of jobs involving repair and maintenance. For a limited amount of vacancies, a massive crowd gathered which led to chaos.

Crowd After Company’s Document Regarding Recruitment

The stampede-like situation occurred after the Air India company released a document mentioning the start of a recruitment exercise at the Mumbai International Airport. Applicants were invited for the interviews at the GSD complex, Near Sahara Police Station, CSMI Airport, Terminal-1, Gate no.5, Sahar, Andheri West, Mumbai venue. All the various positions at the Mumbai International Airport were based on a fixed-term contract of three years. The applicants were supposed to match up to the posts’ requirements and their performances.

Heavy Lifting And Operational Work Jobs

At the airport, the crowd was seen jostling with each other as there was only a limited space. The Air India company reported that they were struggling to manage the huge crowd at the site. They had to ask all the applicants only to submit their resumes to the authorities and then leave the area. All the job vacancies involved heavy lifting and operational work, with salaries ranging between Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 25,000. The educational criteria for the jobs were flexible.

Applicants Asked To Leave After Submitting Resume

George Abraham, general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild condemned the recruitment process at the airport, suggesting that a huge crowd of applicants arrived for a limited number of jobs along with demand drafts. They were then told to not pay anything and that they would be called later regarding their recruitment in the company. They were promised that their resumes would be reviewed. Many of the interviewees came to the site after traveling long distances, because they read the vacancies available.

Worrying Situation Among Youth

Students were enraged at the sight of the company. A similar incident occurred a few days ago in Gujrat where a huge crowd gathered at a hotel venue for interviews of only a small number of vacancies available. These incidents point to a much bigger problem of growing competition and the lack of jobs in the country, raising questions about the youth’s future.
