Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia during his historic visit to Kyiv. This is the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since it gained independence in 1991.

In a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Modi stressed that the world has moved beyond an era of war and called for practical engagement between all parties involved to foster innovative solutions for peace. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who accompanied Modi, explained that the discussions were centered on how India can contribute to resolving the conflict and improving bilateral relations.
Modi Visits Martyrologist Exposition In Kyiv
The visit comes at a significant time as Kyiv is engaged in a new military offensive in Russia’s Kursk region. Modi’s arrival in Kyiv, after a 10-hour train journey from Poland, was marked by a warm reception from the Indian community. He also visited the Martyrologist Exposition, a poignant display commemorating children who have lost their lives due to the conflict. Moreover, Jaishankar noted that Modi had recently visited Moscow, where detailed discussions on the conflict were held. The Indian Prime Minister shared insights from these talks with Zelensky and listened to the Ukrainian leader’s perspectives. The discussions were described as a “back and forth” exchange of ideas and viewpoints.
Modi And Zelenskyy Pledge To Work On Common Issues
Both leaders expressed a strong desire to elevate their countries’ relationship from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic partnership. They pledged to work together on trade, economic issues, defense, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and education. An Intergovernmental Commission was set up to focus specifically on rebuilding trade and economic relations, which have declined recently. During a briefing, Jaishankar highlighted that India has been actively involved in discussions with various countries about the conflict, underscoring that India is not a neutral bystander but a proactive supporter of peace efforts.

A key highlight of Modi’s visit to Ukraine was his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where the two shared a handshake and a hug. President Zelenskyy was seen getting emotional and giving PM Modi a hug.
