The 2024 Summer Olympics also known as Paris Olympics 2024 has been all over the news after various controversies. These controversies range from accommodation complaints to disqualification of sportsperson. It is being said that controversies have outshined the Paris Olympics and the games this year. Paris Olympics 2024 started on 26 July and will end on Augst 11. Here’s a look at few controversies that has happened till now since the Paris Olympics started.
Gold Medallist Thomas Ceccon Sleeping In A Park
An image went viral where the world saw Italian Olympic gold medallist Thomas Ceccon was seen sleeping in park. Thomas went on to publicly criticise the Paris Olympics’ living conditions for the athletes at the Olympics Game Village. He said that there are problems or air conditioning, poor food quality, inadequate nutritional supplies amongst many other problems. Thomas had won gold in men’s100m backstroke. Indian Sports Ministry sent 40 portable ACs to Indian athletes at the game village.
Indian Athletes’ Fall-Back
There have been many controversies regarding unfair treatment with the Indian athletes at the Paris Olympics 2024. Yesterday, on August 7, Indian woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the main match for being 100 grams overweight in the 50kg category match. These sparked criticism for the Paris Olympics organisers. Following this disqualification heartbreak, today, Vinesh announced retirement from wrestling.
Nishant Dev, an Indian boxer, was robbed off a medal at Paris Olympics. Nishant appeared dominant in the earlier rounds of boxing match with Mexican boxer Marco Verde. He lost with a split decision. Ex-Indian boxer Vijendra Singh and actor Randeep Hooda came in support of Nishant while criticising the scoring system of Paris Olympics.
Indian Hockey Team’s defender player Amit Rohidas was given a red-card for allegedly striking an opponent’s face with his hockey stick.
Water Quality of Seine River
River Seine was highly polluted. Despite spending $1.54 billion on Seine river’s cleanup, the river remained to be highly infected. Heavy rains in the region led to cause massive increase in bacteria levels which caused delays and cancellation of many events. The water quality of Seine River was confirmed ‘excellent quality’ but these sparked criticism when few athletes got ill.
Gender Controversy
The women boxing match saw a fair share of controversies when Algerian boxer Imane Khelif knocked down Italy’s Angela Carini and the latter withdraw in 46 seconds of the match. Due to high testosterone levels of Imane, she is always presumed biologically male but she is a female.
