Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid homage to the Indian farm worker, Satnam Singh, who died on Wednesday, after being dumped on the road by his employer without any medical assistance following a severe arm injury. The Indian Embassy in Italy informed about India’s deep concern towards the incident, demanding the Italian government take prompt action against all those responsible for Satnam Singh’s death.
Details From The Incident
31-year-old Satnam Singh belonged to Chand Nawan Village in Punjab. He worked at the strawberry fields in Latina along with his wife. According to an Indian Express report, Satnam Singh lost his arm in a fruit wrapping machine after which the farm owner, instead of taking him to the hospital or providing medical aid, transported Satnam to his house in a minivan and dumped him outside on the roadside. Upon the incident, Satnam’s wife sought help from the neighborhood after which the neighbors called the local police. Satnam was then airlifted to the hospital for medical treatment, but could not make it due to excessive blood loss. He later died on Wednesday, June 26.
Satnam’s Family Demands Justice, Wife Soni Granted Special ‘Justice’ Stay Permit
Satnam’s family is demanding justice and asked the Italian government to get Singh’s body repatriated to his family. Satnam’s father Gurmukh Singh said that he was not aware of Satnam’s accident and was only reported about the same after hearing of his death. For the time, Satnam’s wife, Soni, has been granted a special justice stay permit in Italy, which will end her illegal status in Italy.
Public Outrage Following Singh’s Death, PM Meloni Acknowledges The Severity Of The Incident
Along with Satnam’s family, many Indians are also enraged following this incident, sparking protests in Italy about the provisions of labor rights and protection of migrant workers in the country. Questioning and assessing gang mastering and modern forms of slavery being practiced in Itali is also underway. Satnam Singh’s employer has been charged with negligent manslaughter. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni calls the Sikh farmer’s death to be horrible and inhuman. “These are inhumane acts that do not belong to the Italian people. I hope that this barbarity will be punished harshly”, she further says.
