Nishad Kumar Bags Silver Medal In High Jump, Preethi Pal Creates History With Second Paralympics Medal

Summer Paralympics 2024, is taking place in Paris. It started on 28th August and will conclude on 8th September. It is the 13th time that Indian athletes have participated in the Paralympics since the inauguration of Paralympics. 2020 Tokyo edition of Paralympics had the best statistics for India as it won 19 medals, including five gold medals, eight silver medals and six bronze medals. In Summer Paralympics 2024, India has sent 84 athletes across 12 sports.

Nishad Kumar Wins Silver Medal

On 1st September, Nishad Kumar won a silver medal in Men’s high jump T47. His leap was recorded at 2.04 metres. Nishad also won a silver medal for India during Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Nishad lost his right-hand in a grass-cutting machine at a tender age of six. His mother, a state-level volleyball player and a discus thrower, was the inspiration for Nishad to pursue sports. PM Narendra Modi congratulated Nishad on this achievement at Summer Paralympics 2024.

Preethi Pal Won Second Paralympics Medal

Preethi Pal created a history by winning two medals in Summer Paralympics 2024. She bagged second bronze medal in Women’s 200 m T35 with a personal best time of 30.01 seconds. Preethi suffered from physical challenges since the time of her birth and her lower body was plastered six days after she was born. Due to this, she suffered from weak legs and irregular leg posture. But this didn’t stop her from being an athlete and participating in track events. PM Narendra Modi congratulated Preethi for bagging second medal in Summer Paralympics 2024.

Summer Paralympics 2024 Medal Count For India

Currently, India is on the 27th position from the 60 countries that are participating in Summer Paralympics 2024. India has won seven medals, including one gold medal won by Avani Lekhara in the shooting sport event called – Women’s R2 10 m air rifle standing SH1. Indian sports shooter Manish Narwal won a silver medal in Men’s P1 10 m air pistol SH1. Indian athlete Nishad Kumar also won a silver medal in Men’s high jump T47. Indian sports shooter, Mona Agarwal, won a bronze medal in Women’s R2 10 m air rifle standing SH1. Indian athlete – Preethi Pal, won a bronze medal in Women’s 100 m T35. Indian sports shooter, Rubina Francis won a bronze medal in Women’s P2 10 metre air pistol SH1. Preethi Pal created history as she won her second bronze medal in this edition of Paralympics in Women’s 200 m T35.
