Starting Friday, September 13, Mumbai motorists can enjoy a faster commute thanks to the partial opening of the new connector bridge linking the Coastal Road to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. This new section will provide a signal-free drive from Marine Drive to the Sea Link, reducing travel time from about 90 minutes to just 30 minutes, according to a TOI report. The bridge will make it easier for drivers to reach the Western Express Highway and the international airport.

New Bridge Enhances Commuting Experience

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the bow-string arch bridge connecting the Coastal Road to the Sea Link on September 12. The new bridge will cut down travel time from Marine Drive to Bandra from 45-60 minutes to just 15-20 minutes. This is a significant improvement, as previously the journey could take over an hour. Shinde highlighted the project’s benefits, noting that it will save time, fuel, and reduce pollution while providing a smoother, signal-free drive.

Concerns and Feedback from Residents

Despite the positive changes, some residents have raised concerns. Dr. Nilesh Baxi, a Tardeo resident, pointed out that congestion at the Sea Link toll booth could still cause delays. He also mentioned that issues like traffic jams in the Breach Candy area persist despite the new road improvements. Nandini Chabria from the Breach Candy Residents Forum emphasized the need for smooth final connectivity to fully benefit from the project.

Phased Completion and Future Plans

The Coastal Road project, which has a total budget of over ₹14,000 crore, is being completed in phases. The southbound stretch from Worli to Marine Drive opened earlier this year, followed by the northbound section from Marine Drive to Haji Ali, and then from Haji Ali to Worli. The latest opening marks the fourth stretch of this ambitious project. Shinde also mentioned plans to extend the Coastal Road to Versova, utilizing advanced technology to enhance the infrastructure.

Commitment to Better Infrastructure

At the inauguration, Shinde promised that Mumbai would see fully concrete roads without potholes within the next two years, further improving the city’s road conditions. The new Coastal Road connector is expected to play a crucial role in alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing the overall commuting experience in Mumbai.
