A violent mob attack on Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital late last night has escalated tensions following the recent rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor. The incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked widespread outrage and protests.

Police Clarifies Vandalisation Of Hospital’s Seminar Room

Kolkata Police have addressed concerns about the disturbing crime scene while also clarifying that the seminar room where the doctor was found has not been disrupted. The Kolkata police further shared in a post on X to refute claims that the crime scene was vandalized and warned against spreading unverified information. They also noted that legal action would be taken against those spreading false rumors.

Suspicions Of Mamata Banerjee’s Hand In Mob Attack

Last night on Wednesday, as protests against the crime intensified, a mob of around 2000 to 2500 people stormed the campus of the medical college The attackers vandalized the property, damaged vehicles, and clashed with the police, resulting in injuries to several officers. The police later had to use tear gas to control the situation and tame the violence. BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of sending Trinamool Congress (TMC) “goons” to disrupt a peaceful protest rally near the hospital. He alleged that these individuals, disguised as protesters, aimed to sabotage the investigation by damaging the crime scene.

Union Minister Criticises State Police And TMC

Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar condemned both the state police and the TMC government, accusing them of failing to maintain law and order. He claimed that doctors inside the hospital were assaulted and that the police did nearly nothing to intervene in the serious matter. Moreover, Majumdar has promised to visit the college to protest against the situation.

CBI Takes Over Case, FORDA To Continue Protests

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case following the Calcutta High Court’s intervention. The court’s decision came after the victim’s family and the public expressed dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police’s progress in the investigation. The CBI’s involvement aims to ensure a much-needed thorough and unbiased investigation. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association India (FORDA) has announced it would resume its strike until their demands are addressed after it was previously suspended due to assurances from the health ministry.
