In a concerning development, a 38-year-old man in Kerala’s Malappuram district has been confirmed with Mpox. The patient, who had recently returned from Dubai, showed symptoms of the virus. After being admitted to the Government Medical College in Malappuram, his samples were sent for testing, which confirmed the infection.
Isolation and Precautionary Measures Taken
Upon his return from Dubai, the man took necessary precautions. Isolating himself at home with proper hygiene measures, he stayed in a separate room with attached toilet facilities. His early isolation helped limit the spread of the virus to others, showcasing the importance of self-care during such infections.
Admission to Hospital
The patient initially sought treatment at a private hospital after falling sick, where the doctors suspected it might be Mpox. He was soon shifted to the Manjeri Medical College for better care. His samples were sent to Kozhikode Medical College for confirmation, as doctors treated him for the suspected viral illness.
Mpox Symptoms and Spread
Mpox, a viral illness related to smallpox, typically presents itself through skin rashes, fever, and flu-like symptoms. In severe cases, it can leave scars and deep lesions on the body. The disease spreads through close skin-to-skin contact, making it important for people to maintain hygiene and avoid physical contact with infected individuals.
Kerala’s Alert for Mpox
Kerala has remained on alert for Mpox since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. This decision came after a surge in Mpox cases across various African nations. Kerala had already reported cases of Mpox back in 2022, and the health department has been closely monitoring for any new outbreaks.
Health Minister’s Statement
Kerala’s health minister, Veena George, informed reporters that the patient had isolated himself after suspecting he might have Mpox. She confirmed that all precautionary measures had been taken, and the government was prepared to handle the situation. The minister further urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, encouraging people to take preventive measures.
Previous Mpox Cases in India
India has witnessed sporadic cases of Mpox, with around 30 confirmed cases reported since July 2022. A recent case in Delhi involved a 26-year-old from Haryana who tested positive for the virus. Despite these cases, the Union health ministry has maintained that the current cases do not pose a widespread public health threat.
The Origin and History of Mpox
Mpox, also known as monkeypox, originated in Africa, where it was first identified in the 1950s. Historically, it was confined to specific regions of the continent, but recent global travel and interactions have led to its spread in other parts of the world. Although related to smallpox, Mpox is usually less severe, though it can be fatal in certain cases.
How Mpox Spreads
The primary mode of transmission of Mpox is through close contact with infected individuals. This includes physical touch, contact with body fluids, and touching objects or surfaces used by someone infected. Proper hygiene, isolation, and medical care are essential to controlling its spread.
Precautions to Take
In light of recent cases, Kerala has been proactive in spreading awareness about Mpox. The government advises citizens to maintain personal hygiene, avoid contact with infected individuals, and seek medical help if they show symptoms. Early detection and isolation remain key to preventing the virus from spreading further.
