President Joe Biden delivered a heartfelt address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday, August 20, marking a significant moment as he officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s candidate for the 2024 presidential election. This comes after Biden decides to withdraw from the US presidential race, ahead of elections in November. 

Joe Biden Gets Emotional

The 81-year-old President expressed his commitment to moving the country forward and praised Harris as his successor. Joe Biden says, “America, I gave my best to you”, noting that he wanted to ensure America continues progressing rather than reverting to the past. The speech was seemingly emotional, with Biden being introduced by his daughter Ashley and wife Jill. At one point, he dabbed away tears and put his hand on his heart, deeply moved by the enthusiastic response from the audience.

Kamala Harris Honors Joe Biden

Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise early appearance at the convention, which typically sees nominee speeches on the final day. She used the opportunity to honor Joe Biden, calling him “an incredible president” and thanking him for his “historic leadership and lifetime of service.” 

Joe Biden Reflects On His Presidency 

Moreover, Biden reflected on his presidency and his decision to step aside. He highlighted his achievements and defended his administration’s record. Biden’s speech also endorsed Harris, who he described as “tough,” “experienced,” and possessing “enormous integrity.” After the speech, Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff embraced Biden and his wife Jill on stage.

Several Speakers Praise Biden Including Hillary Clinton 

Throughout the evening, several speakers, including Delaware Senator Chris Coons and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, praised Biden. Coons called Biden “the most compassionate man” he knows, while Clinton noted Biden’s efforts to restore dignity to the White House. Clinton also highlighted Harris’s impending role, noting that while she did not break the “highest, hardest glass ceiling” by becoming president, Harris would soon do so.

Barack Obama And Bill Clinton To Speak On Wednesday

Despite his imminent departure from the presidency, Biden’s legacy was celebrated with warmth and gratitude. The former Presidents of the US Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are set to speak on the following day. Biden’s time in Chicago was brief, and his remaining months in office will be focused on ensuring a smooth transition to Harris.
