Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that recent strikes on Lebanon are just one part of a broader military effort against Hezbollah. Netanyahu emphasized that these attacks were not the end and vowed continued action to secure northern Israel and allow residents to return safely to their homes.
Israeli Military Destroys Thousands Of Rockets
During a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu revealed that the Israeli military had destroyed thousands of short-range rockets intended to target civilians and soldiers in the Galilee region. He also mentioned that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted all Hezbollah drones aimed at a significant but undisclosed target in central Israel. Israeli media suggest that this target might have been the headquarters of the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency.
Indian Navy Sailor Killed, Two Others Injured
The conflict escalated early on Sunday when Hezbollah launched an attack on northern Israel, resulting in the death of an Israeli Navy sailor and injuries to two others. The deceased sailor was identified as Petty Officer First Class David Moshe Ben Shitrit, 21. Initial investigations suggest that shrapnel from an Iron Dome missile, which was supposed to intercept Hezbollah drones, may have hit the Navy vessel. The ship is currently being repaired and expected to return to service soon. In response to Hezbollah’s attack, which involved firing over 300 Katyusha rockets at several Israeli military bases, Israel carried out a preemptive strike on southern Lebanon. The strikes targeted Hezbollah launch sites in an effort to prevent further attacks on northern Israel.
Israel’s Airstrikes On Lebanon Cause Damage To Hezbollah
This latest round of violence follows months of tension and exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah’s recent actions are seen as retaliation for the killing of its commander Fuad Shukr last month, and the conflict has intensified since then. The Israeli military reported that its airstrikes on southern Lebanon focused on the border region and caused significant damage to Hezbollah’s capabilities.
Israel Declares ‘Special Situation’
In reaction to the escalating violence, Israel has declared a nationwide “special situation” for 48 hours, with restrictions placed on civilians in northern Israel and the Golan Heights. Ben Gurion Airport was temporarily closed, and there have been reports of injuries in northern Israel. The U.S. has expressed its support for Israel’s right to defend itself and has been in continuous communication with Israeli officials. Meanwhile, international concerns are growing about the potential for the conflict to widen, especially with ongoing peace talks in Egypt aimed at resolving the broader war on Gaza. Netanyahu’s firm stance indicates that Israel is prepared for a prolonged engagement, aiming to ensure the safety of its citizens and counter Hezbollah’s threats.
