Heavy Protests Break Out In France After Unexpected Exit Poll Results, Country Faces Hung Parliament

Violence broke out in Paris and Lyon after the leftist Popular Front party won a plurality, all parties still short of a majority

Several videos of protests in France are surfacing online after the exit poll forecasted the unexpected victory of the left-wing New Popular Front coalition will emerge victorious, defeating Emmanual Macron’s centrist party, and Marine Le Pen’s National Rally. After no majority secured by any major political party in France, the country is facing a hung parliament. Citizens in France are concerned about the country’s governance leading to unrest and chaos. 

Leftist Party Wins A Plurality Although Still Short Of A Majority

According to poll agencies, the leftist party, upon a swift turn of events, was expected to get around 184-198 seats. Although the number is still short enough to attain the majority mark of 289 out of all 577 seats in the National Assembly. On the other hand, Emmanuel Amcron’s centrist party was estimated to secure about 160-169 seats. The far-right National Rally along with other allies were expected to secure 135-143 seats. After the far-eft coalition won a plurality in the parliament, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal declared resignation. Following this, conservatives are concerned and disappointed as they had expected Marine Le Pen’s National Rally to come into power. 

Chaos Emeged In Paris And Lyon, Protestors Set Off Smoke Bombs 

The citizens of France were agitated as a result of which violent protests broke out on the streets of Paris and Lyon, with massive bonfires flaring up on the streets of Paris as part of the protest. The authorities of the riot team made several arrests and the police used tear gas to expel huge crowds. As a result of the arrests of demonstrators, protestors contributed to the escalation of the anarchy in Paris by throwing off Molotov cocktails and setting off smoke bombs.

Uncertainty Of The Country’s Governance Cause For Concern Among Citizens

On another extreme, supporters of the far-left were happy with the results and celebrated. The Republique Plaza in eastern Paris saw many people applauding the results and celebrating by sharing hugs with other supporters. Moreover, the current hung parliament in France is expected to have a significant effect on its markets. In a broader sense, it is also predicted to have an impact on the war in Ukraine. The uncertainty has soared in the country, leading to concerns about the country’s direction.
