Five Army personnel have been killed and six injured after terrorists attacked a military convoy in the remote area of Machedi in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on the afternoon of Monday, July 8. The soldiers were attacked from about 150 kilometers from Kathua when the army vehicles were conducting a routine patrol at the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar road. The area of the attack falls under the 9 Corps of the Indian Army. The injured soldiers have been shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Terrorists Threw Grenade And Later Opened Fire, Soldiers Retaliate
According to official reports, the terrorists first made an initial attack followed by throwing a grenade, then they opened fire. The security forces retaliated to the attack immediately but the terrorists fled into the nearby forests. Later it was reported that an intermittent firing was ongoing between the soldiers and the terrorists. Soon after, reinforcements rushed to the scene to neutralize the terrorists and a search operation was launched to track the terrorists. This was the second major case in the Kathua district in the last four weeks.
Soldier Prabhakar Praveen Sacrifices Life During Operation
Following the attack, Brigadier Prithviraj Chauhan, Commander 1sec RR, suggested that the killing of the terrorists in Southern Kashmir was a significant blow to the militant organization, Hizbul-Mujahideen. Prithviraj Chauhan also reported that one of the army personnel, Prabhakar Praveen also sacrificed his life during the operation, called the Chinigham operation. The Commander also said that the team, along with all agencies and Army surveillance, had been monitoring movements in the same area for more than a few days. They received information regarding terrorist movements in the Chinigham area on July 6 around 4 PM. When the team challenged the terrorists, they began to fire with retaliation from both ends, also leading to one soldier’s martyrdom. The first such encounter happened between terrorists and soldiers in the Madergam Village.

Meanwhile, Monday’s attack comes after an attack just a day before where six terrorists were killed in two separate encounters in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.
