Continuing its jibe at the Emergency imposed by the Congress in the 1970s, Union Minister Amit Shah has declared June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ or the Constitution Killing Day. Amit Shah made the announcement on platform X, stating that on June 25, 1975, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi strangled the soul of the Indian Constitution by imposing an Emergency on the country. Lakhs of people were imprisoned without any reason and the media was also silenced.

June 25 To Mark The Day To Pay Homage To All Those Suffered

The Home Minister stated in his post on X that the Government of India has decided to observe June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ every year, to commemorate the massive contributions to all the people who had to endure the inhumane pains of the Emergency and had to become victims to a gross abuse of power by the leaders. He called Indira Gandhi’s decision a display of a dictatorial mindset. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also made the post on X saying that the day is a reminder that our constitution was stepped over and that it will be marked as a day to pay homage to all those who suffered during the Emergency period.

Congress Hits Back At BJP, Labels June 4 ‘ModiMukti Diwas’

Congress has reacted by condemning the BJP’s move. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated that the decision was just another headline-grabbing move in hypocrisy by the ‘non-biological’ Prime minister. He further said that Narendra Modi himself imposed a non-declared Emergency before the people of India for ten years, before he was at last given a personal, political, and moral defeat by the people of India on June 4, 2024. He claimed that this defeat would go down in history as the ‘ModiMukti Diwas’. He further said that PM Modi has subjected the Indian constitution’s principles and values to systematic assault.

Emergency’s Lasting Impact On Indian Politics

Throughout the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, many opposition parties, especially Congress along with the judiciary and the citizens of India, have continually condemned the BJP for its attempt to violate the constitution of India. Many leaders and politicians have pointed out that the NDA had initially set a target of winning 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections because it intended to amend our constitution after power is secured. On June 25 this year, it has been 50 years since the Emergency was imposed in India which saw the suspension of civil liberties, mass arrests, and cancellation of the elections. The Emergency was a transforming chapter in India’s political history.
