The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken significant steps in the investigation of the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Saturday, August 17, the CBI sent forensic experts from Delhi’s Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to conduct a psycho-analysis test on Sanjoy Roy, the main suspect in the case.
Main Suspect, Sanjoy Roy Arrested
Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer associated with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on Saturday. This came just a day after the doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy, who is also a trained boxer, had built connections with senior police officers over the years. He was recently transferred to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and stationed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
CBI Interrogates Sandip Ghosh, Visits Crime Scene
The CBI has been busy questioning key individuals connected to the case. On Saturday, they interrogated Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for the second consecutive day. Ghosh was asked about his initial response to the doctor’s death, including how he informed her family and contacted the police. Furthermore, the CBI visited the crime scene at RG Kar Medical College and the police barrack in Salt Lake where Roy had been staying. Investigators collected samples from the hospital and spoke to other policemen about Roy’s activities on the morning of the incident.
IMA Urges PM Modi To Call For Stronger Protections
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for stronger protections for healthcare workers following the incident. They have urged the Prime Minister to support a new law aimed at preventing violence against medical professionals. Protests continue across the country as medical professionals express their outrage. Major private hospitals in Delhi joined the protests by closing their outpatient services, elective surgeries, and inpatient services. In response to the crime, the West Bengal government has introduced new safety measures for women working late hours. This includes designated restrooms, women volunteers, and areas with CCTV surveillance.
Victim’s Mother Voices Distress
The victim’s mother has voiced her distress, claiming that her daughter had expressed discomfort about working at RG Kar Medical College before the attack. She also criticized the police for delaying her family’s access to her daughter’s body and for allegedly vandalizing the victim’s car. Moreover, the case has sparked political controversy, with BJP leader Amit Malviya accusing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Kolkata Police of mishandling the evidence. In contrast, Banerjee has defended the police investigation and criticized the BJP for spreading false information.
