On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took action against actor and MP Kangana Ranaut for her controversial remarks linking the farmers’ protest to unrest in Bangladesh. The BJP clarified that her comments did not reflect the party’s stance and emphasized that she was not authorized to speak on their behalf.
Statement from the BJP
The BJP issued a statement saying, “Kangana Ranaut’s views on the farmers’ protest are not aligned with the party’s position. She does not represent the BJP’s views on this issue.” This reprimand followed Ranaut’s claim that the farmers’ protest was an attempt to destabilize India similar to the unrest in Bangladesh.
Ranaut’s Controversial Comments
In a video posted on X, Ranaut suggested that the farmers’ protest had the potential to escalate into a situation akin to Bangladesh’s unrest. She stated, “Outside forces are planning to destroy us with the help of insiders. If not for our leadership’s foresight, they would have succeeded.” This statement added fuel to the ongoing controversy surrounding the farmers’ protest.
Previous Controversies
This is not the first time Kangana Ranaut has been at the center of controversy regarding the farmers’ protest. During the 2020-21 protests, she mistakenly identified an elderly woman as Bilkis Bano, a key figure from the Shaheen Bagh protests. Ranaut claimed the woman was paid to participate in protests, which drew widespread criticism.
BJP’s Directive to Ranaut
The BJP has instructed Ranaut to refrain from making such statements in the future. The party reaffirmed its commitment to social harmony, as reflected in their motto, “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas Aur Sabka Prayaas” (Together with All, Development for All, Trust of All, and Effort of All).
Incident at Chandigarh Airport
Adding to the controversy, on June 6, 2023, Ranaut was allegedly slapped by a CISF personnel at Chandigarh airport. The constable’s action was reportedly related to a previous comment by Ranaut about the farmers’ protest.
Historical Context of the Farmers’ Protest
The farmers’ protest, which lasted for over a year, was a significant event in Indian history. It was primarily against the now-repealed farm laws and garnered widespread attention. The protest was marked by large-scale demonstrations and sit-ins, reflecting the deep-seated issues within the agricultural sector.
