Assam Minor Gangrape Case: Accused Dies In The Police Custody

On Thursday, allegedly, a 14-year-old girl was gangraped by three people in Assam’s Nagaon district. Out of the three people, one was arrested. The minor girl was left in an injured and unconscious state on the roadside, near a pond. Locals rescued the girl and informed the police. The incident started massive protests in Assam.

What Happened With The Girl?

The 14-year-old minor girl was assaulted and raped by three men at around 8 PM on Thursday when she was coming back from her tuition classes on her bicycle. This incident happened in the Dhing area of Nagaon, Assam.

Who Was The Culprit?

One of the three people of allegedly gangraped the minor girl was arrested by the police. Tafazul Islam (24) was arrested by the police and was charged under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the POCSO Act. Still two culprits are on the run and have not been caught by the police.

How did Tafazul Die?

The police under whose custody Tafazul was kept, claimed that they took Tafazul on the crime scene late during the Friday night. At the crime scene, police claimed that Tafazul was trying to escape and jumped into the pond which resulted into his death.

Statement By Police

While making a statement on Tafazul’s death, Nagaon’s SP said that after he was interrogated, he was taken to the crime scene. It is there that he tried to escape and jumped into a lake. The police sealed the area immediately and called the SDRF. After the SDRF searched, they recovered the dead body after two hours. The constable, who was holding his handcuffs, has got some injury in his hand and has been sent for treatment.

Assam CM’s Statement

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma while talking about the Assam minor gangrape case said, “When there is any atrocity against women, we need to take prompt action. I would like to say just one thing. When there is any atrocity against women, we need to take prompt action. But the public should see that the government is taking strict action. When people feel that the government is showing laxity, they get angry. When such incidents take place, the government should take very aggressive action. The government in Bengal didn’t do it, so people got angry.”
