An 18-year-old rickshaw driver from a rural village in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district has made history with her inspiring narrative of perseverance . At the famous Prince’s Trust Awards in London, Arti, whose steadfast spirit has inspired countless young girls, was recently honored with the distinguished Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award.
Beating the Odds and Choosing Empowerment
Arti’s narrative, who came from modest origins, is proof of the transformational power of bravery and tenacity. Motivated by an unwavering determination to set her own path, she set out on a quest that would not only transform her personal situation but also inspire hope in a great number of other people.
Arti shot to fame thanks to her participation in the revolutionary Pink E-Rickshaw project of the Indian government. She received a pink e-rickshaw—a symbol of sustainable transportation and a force for change—as part of this ground-breaking program that aims to empower women and increase their income-earning prospects.
Orienting towards Ecological Mobility

Increasing Women’s Power and Changing Communities
For women like Arti, the Pink E-Rickshaw initiative, which was launched in July 2023 thanks to a collaboration between the Indian government, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), and Prince’s Trust International, has changed the game. The program intends to provide access to safe transportation while increasing work prospects for vulnerable women, especially widows and single moms, by offering subsidized pink e-rickshaws to female drivers.
The CEO of AKF (India), Tinni Sawhney, accompanied Arti to the award event. “Arti truly embodies the courage, perseverance, and determination to succeed against all odds, emerging as a role model for women in her village,” Sawhney stated. “We are immensely grateful for our partnership with the Prince’s Trust International that has enabled us to support young women to realize their dreams and aspirations.”
