After a 14-year-old boy in Kerala died from the Nipah virus, the Centre has advised immediate measures to prevent further spread. The Union health ministry recommended four actions: conducting active case searches and contact tracing in the affected areas, quarantining contacts of the confirmed case, isolating symptomatic suspects, and collecting and testing samples from potential contacts. A multi-member outbreak response team from the National ‘One Health Mission’ will assist the state government, while monoclonal antibodies were sent for patient management, though they were not administered to the boy due to his poor condition. A mobile BSL-3 laboratory is also deployed in Kozhikode. Previous Nipah outbreaks in Kerala have been linked to fruit bats.

AAP MP Alleges BJP Conspiracy Against Kejriwal’s Health

AAP MP Sanjay Singh has accused the BJP of plotting to harm Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been in Tihar Jail since March 21. Singh claims the BJP is manipulating Kejriwal’s health, citing allegations from Lt Governor VK Saxena that Kejriwal is deliberately skipping meals. The AAP reports a significant weight loss in Kejriwal, suggesting a serious health issue. Singh argues the BJP’s statements are false and part of a larger conspiracy. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate had accused Kejriwal of consuming high-sugar foods to secure medical bail. Despite bail in one case, Kejriwal remains jailed due to another. The controversy has intensified the political rivalry between AAP and BJP.

Haryana Suspends Mobile Services in Nuh Due to Security Concerns

Haryana has suspended mobile internet and SMS services in Nuh for 24 hours, from 6 pm Sunday to 6 pm Monday, due to security concerns surrounding the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra. The suspension aims to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumors following last year’s violence, where communal clashes erupted after attacks on a religious procession organized by the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. To ensure the event’s smooth conduct, the police have established inter-state checkpoints, and the entire route will be monitored by CCTV and drones. Meat, fish, and poultry shops along the route will remain closed, and a ban on weapons in vehicles has been imposed.

Fire at Moga Substation Causes Transformer Damage

A major fire broke out at the 220-kV grid substation in Singhan Wala village, Moga, on July 20, damaging several transformers. Fire tenders from various areas responded and extinguished the blaze after considerable effort. The fire disrupted power supply to surrounding villages, though there were no casualties. This incident mirrors a similar event on May 10, when a fire at the same substation caused a complete shutdown in the Malwa region due to a transformer blast. The cause of the latest fire is unknown. Punjab’s Principal Secretary of Power, Tejveer Singh, reported that a 20 MW transformer was burned but assured that efforts are underway to restore power from alternative sources.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has offered shelter to “helpless people” from Bangladesh amid ongoing student-led protests in the country. Citing a UN resolution on refugee accommodation, Banerjee, speaking at a Trinamool Congress rally, stated that her state will provide refuge to those fleeing the violence. She also expressed support for residents with relatives stuck in Bangladesh and promised assistance to Bangladeshis facing difficulties returning home. Banerjee urged West Bengal residents to remain calm and not be provoked by the situation, which includes a recent internet and cellular service shutdown in Bangladesh. She expressed sadness over the violence and solidarity with the students protesting against the quota system.
